Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you tell me more about the Pittsburgh Riders or send me additional information on the group?

A: We would love to answer any specific questions you have; we have put all the general info we can think of on this website.

Q: Where do you meet?

A: We do not have a set meeting place for rides or events. Whoever plans a ride or event generally will pick a location and time for the group to meet for that time. More often than not it is a very democratic process and the group tries to find a location for the members that have indicated their intention in participating in that activity. It can be anywhere and is generally suggested to be well known or easy to find location, since members may be coming from all over the Greater Pittsburgh area. One of the more common locations we use is the lower parking lot for the Duquesne incline as it is easy to find and easy to get a group of riders out of the city in any direction with minimal traffic signs. As members get together and learn what area of town each other lives it, it is common for them to begin to meet closer to home and ride to meet the rest of the group at the general meeting location.

Q: Can you send me posted on rides?

A: We do our best to keep everyone in the loop, but there is always something going on and rides popping up all the time. We use the groups “mass email list” sparingly and HIGHLY RECOMMEND, all members check the bigtent.com forum / post page (a few times a week) to keep up with all group activity. When you set up your profile on the bigtent site, you can select an option where updates can be emailed to you, but to participate it is still help full to log in and join the conversations.

Q: What exactly do you mean when you refer to an "independent" rider?

A: Independent Rider refers to any motorcycle enthusiast who loves to ride and is not a patch wearing member of any Motorcycle Club or Riding Club.

Q: Are there woman in your group?

A: Yes and they have full and equal standing in the Pittsburgh Riders. We are not a match making service and the women who are a part of the group did not join for that purpose, but rather to enjoy sharing the motorcycle riding experience like any of us.

Q: I love riding motorcycles as a passenger, can you help me find people to ride with?

A: Passengers can have full membership with the Pittsburgh Riders.  However, we will not match you up with someone to ride with... you need to provide your own ride. We would be more than happy to guide you on your way to obtaining your M class license and help you find a bike of your own so you do not need to rely on someone else to get out and ride.

Q:  What kind of bikes do the members of Pittsburgh Riders ride?

A: Members have all kinds of motorcycles; we do not discriminate base on make, model or style of bike. Only that it has less than 4 wheels, is street legal, and that you can safely keep up with the group. With that said, an average ride may cover 150 - 200 miles in a day, riding back roads and interstates alike.

Q:  What skill level is required to be a part of the Pittsburgh Riders?

A: As long as you have your permit or M class license you can ride with us.  If you have limited experience riding and/ or have never participated in a group before, please inform the group you are riding with of your limited experience (especially the organizer of that ride). You will not be judged due to inexperience.  If this group has any goal it would be to come alongside new riders or those that do not get out very much and help them gain the skills and experience, so that they will feel comfortable riding in a group and logging more and more miles each year.
